Jacksonville Jaguars Wipe The Slate Clean

February 26th, 2010 FunClub

Jacksonville, Florida – at a point in time in history – had stated that they could not support a professional football team. However, ticket sales for the Jacksonville Jaguars have proven otherwise and have successfully supported the NFL franchise for years. Jaguar fans are dedicated and continue to purchase tickets and show up to all their home games regardless of their season record.

It was in’92 that the NFL was considering adding another franchise to the league, they just did not know where. Jacksonville, FL was in the running – obviously – along with Charlotte, NC, St. Louis, MO, Baltimore, MD, and Memphis, TN with Jacksonville being at the bottom of the list. After all, Florida was already the home to two NFL franchises.

Jacksonville was not only at the bottom of the list, but it was almost pre-determined that the new franchise would not be in Jacksonville. TV ratings were low, the city was small, and there just wasn’t enough there to justify this decision. Well, until the city sold 10,000 tickets in 10 days there wasn’t. These ticket sales proved – to the league – that Jacksonville was worthy of a franchise and that residents would fully support their new team.

In their 16 years of playing professional football, the Jacksonville Jaguars have not yet made it to the Super Bowl, but they have played in the AFC Division Championship playoff games. Both the’96 and’99 seasons ended with the Jaguars fighting for the AFC Division Title. The Jaguars, in their first four years as a team, made it to the playoffs three times; this is a record in the NFL.

In 2007, the Jaguars played an incredible season ending it with a—2 record. Fans anticipated this energy to carry over into the 2008 season; however, they used it all up in the 2007 playoffs. Unfortunately, the 2008 season was one of the worst seasons the team had yet experienced.

Many people – fans, investors, sports nuts – were rooting for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2008 season, and some were even saying it might be there year to make it to the Super Bowl. Obviously, there was something in there way. It was apparent that the season would not get any better when the Cincinnati Bengals – with a 0-8 record – beat the Jaguars by three measly points.

Even though there were flaws and mistakes, the team played hard at every single game, they just continually missed opportunities that would have gotten them more wins. The team and management took a pounding in 2008, and it began to show in their games. Finally, when they played the Lions, their defeat pushed them to a win by a field goal right at the end of the game. This right here might be the turning point, for the team, after an embarrassing year.

There is no sugarcoating it, 2008 was a bad year for the Jaguars. Fans and players are; however, hopeful that 2009 will be a better year – one like they have played so many of in the past. Injured players are back this year, along with some new faces; the combination of these two things is giving the team – and fans – hope again. Fans are already looking for season tickets and, like always, will fill the stands during every home game.
