Soccer
The world’s favorite sport, Football, or more commonly known as Soccer, is a game played between two teams having 11 players each. It is played in a rectangular ground having a grass or synthetic surface. The centres of both the shorter ends of the rectangle have the goal which is surrounded by two goal posts and a bar on the top. The objective of the game is to kick a spherical object, or in more common words a football, through the goal which is guarded by the opponent’s goal keeper. Besides the goal keeper no other player is allowed to use their hands to handle the ball. Other players can make use of their feet to kick the ball around and score goals. Use of one’s head or torso is also allowed while handling the ball in mid air.
Soccer was codified in 1863 by the Football Association, which laid the foundation for the sport we all love to watch and play today. FIFA governs the state of international football today and also hosts the most awaited tournament every four years, the FIFA World Cup. Besides international tournaments, the domestic leagues are doing a good job in maintaining the soccer spirit in several countries. The English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, the Spanish La Liga, the French Ligue 1 and the German Bundesliga are the top five European leagues that are followed all around the world. Each league attracts highly professional football stars and also new talents from various countries in Europe and Africa. The wage cost of each league alone is over 600 million pounds.
Of the five most popular leagues, the English Premier League deserves a special mention. The league consists of 20 teams each of them playing every other team in the league twice, thus having 38 games for a team in the season and totally 380 games in the entire season. The league began in 1992 and since then Manchester United has managed to win 11 championship titles and has proved to be the most successful club in the league.
The key to the popularity of soccer is its simplicity. A good majority of soccer fans also happen to be soccer players. The equipment needed to play the game does not include anything more than a ground and a ball. Each of the clubs belonging to their respective leagues has built up a massive multi national fan base, which has not only helped improve the popularity of the club but in a way has turned into a serious business for the clubs.
