Oakland Looks To Do Battle In A Very Strong Division

March 9th, 2010 wowow

To deny that Oakland has a lot of work to do to get back into the American League West would be a lie. However, a team does not have to necessarily be a World Series favorite to get the fans excited. Come the first day of the season, any team could come out of a division and get into the playoffs. The question is, “Will the Oakland Athletics be one of those teams?”

The Oakland Athletics have been one of the busier teams this off-season. They may not have made a blockbuster deal, but they have quietly signed some free agents, locked up some young talent and continue to make improvement on last season’s. Will they win the division? Who knows, but they are surely going to be a much better team.

If anyone is looking for signs of hope, look no further than the signing of Ben Sheets. This is a legitimate pitching stud that welcomed the role that he will be thrust in with this young team. Having a talent like this for one year is better than nothing, but expect him to look to resign if this team shows that they can once again play some decent baseball.

It addition to Mr. Sheets taking the ball every 5th day, Andrew Bailey will be there to clean the games up in the ninth inning. While he may not yet be a household name, if he duplicates his performance from last season, it is only a matter of time before everyone who loves baseball is uttering his name. There is little doubt that he will close out the game when the ball gets into his hands.

There may not be a big name star in the lineup, but that will change soon enough. Hey, even Pujols was a rookie at one time. Expect the A’s to rely more on their speed than their power this season and a lot of long rally innings that can cause teams to go deep into their bullpen and the scoreboard to light up like a Christmas tree.

Something that every young team has in their back pocket is the prospect of not being taken as a serious threat to the major contenders. We have seen many clubs in the past take advantage of that and get deep into the post season. A recent example of this would be the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008.

Fans that wait until the last minute to start going to games are fools because some of the best action starts right out of the gate. There is definitely more than one future star on this team and having a chance to see them at this stage of their career is truly something special. Go early and go often because your team may just surprise you this year.
